Waiapu is my river

Reporua is my marae

Tū AuAu is my meeting house.

"As for my reo, I thank my mother. My brother and I were not taught te reo Māori. We were fortunate that the Māori language was the only language spoken, not only in our family home but also with extended family members, who all lived nearby. This was the only language we heard, until we attended school."

  • About this book:

Both titles, written in Te reo Māori and featuring images of New Zealand culture, are designed to help babies and young children focus on and recognise word shapes and phrases. Research shows that high-contrast images help calm the mind and stimulate neural connections in babies and toddlers.

Te Whare is an early te reo Māori language learning book. It features high-definition images and a simple plot, following a toddler as she searches for something special in her family home. The repetitive text and straightforward images make it perfect for beginners in te reo, while also serving as a search-and-find for older readers. As she moves through the rooms, readers have the chance to learn basic household vocabulary.

Ko Kiwi Ma uses high-definition images and simple Māori phrases to teach the numbers 1 to 10 through iconic New Zealand fauna, from one kiwi to 10 scallops.

This combined, flip edition has been slightly enlarged to encourage sharing. Both stories are designed for early te reo Māori language learning, ideal for use in classrooms and homes, and include glossaries
