The Guardian of the Land
About this title:
David has been ill and staying with relatives in Kaikōura until he is well enough to return to school. Here, he meets Rua and his ancient grandmother, Nanny Henare.
Nanny is a powerful old lady determined to recover a long-lost pendant for her people before she dies. A pendant known as the 'guardian of the land'.
On a visit to the seal colony, the boys are caught up in a strange event that later David can only describe as a dream.
Without their knowing, David and Rua have become part of Nanny Henare’s quest. It is to lead them into some very weird and dramatic adventures across time.

Reviews:
I absolutely adored this book as a child. It brought to life historic scenes of Aotearoa in the way that dry school lessons never could, creating a vibrant and terrifying and deeply spiritual world that one can’t help to feel personally connected to. It is a book that has stayed with me for many years, and I always hoped to find a copy - which I was lucky enough to do so recently in a second-hand book store. (Goodreads)
